It gives me anxiety! Black Academics’ experiences of teaching large classes during the Covid-19 pandemic in a South African university

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the teaching and learning in international higher education. Those of us global South have particularly been hard hit, struggling balance working/ functioning economies, a healthcare system, education, commerce, trade, transport, community spread what was later found be very infectious disease (Porter et al., 2021; Rogerson & Rogerson, 2020; Shamasunder 2020). In this paper, we explored theorised experiences academics who taught large classes at research-intensive university Africa. We purposely recruited interviewed eight for case study. drew on Chela Sandoval’s (2013) philosophical notion “decolonial love” theorise an inclusive, democratic ubuntu-orientated could look like South, beyond pandemic. findings revealed that continue frustrated/challenged/made anxious with due inadequate infrastructure (digital), lack resources, general unpreparedness virtual/online learning. also were problematic as struggled provide critical engagements discussions during Covid-19 lockdown, some lamenting frustrations “teaching themselves” student engagement. conclude paper by proposing decolonial love approach online classes, underpinned ethics care, compassion understanding curriculum imaginations.
